Personal data is information relating to an identified or identifiable person. We process personal data only where necessary to operate this website, respond to requests, protect the service, or comply with legal obligations.

SSL or TLS encryption

This website uses HTTPS encryption. You can recognize an encrypted connection by the lock symbol in your browser and an address beginning with https://. Encryption protects transmitted data from being read by third parties during transport.

Storage period

Unless a specific period is stated below, personal data is retained only until the purpose for processing no longer applies. Data may be retained longer where statutory retention obligations apply or where it is required to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.

3. Hosting and server logs

When you access the website, the hosting provider may automatically process technical connection information in server log files. This can include:

• IP address
• date and time of the request
• requested page or file
• referrer URL
• browser type and version
• operating system
• HTTP status and transferred data volume

This processing is necessary to deliver the website securely, diagnose errors, and prevent abuse. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, based on our legitimate interest in a secure and reliable website. Logs are deleted or anonymized when they are no longer required, subject to security incidents and legal obligations.

Tech Stuff does not currently use advertising, analytics, tracking cookies, user accounts, or marketing profiles. The website may rely on technically necessary browser behavior. If optional cookies or analytics are introduced later, this policy and any required consent mechanism must be updated before those services are activated.

5. External publisher feeds

The server retrieves RSS, Atom, and sitemap data from selected technology publishers to display current titles, short feed summaries, dates, and links. These requests are made by the Tech Stuff server and cached locally. Visitors are not identified to those publishers merely because an entry is displayed on Tech Stuff.

When you open an article, you leave Tech Stuff and connect directly to the external publisher. That provider receives connection data such as your IP address, browser information, time of access, and potentially the referring page. The publisher’s own privacy policy then applies. External links use noopener and noreferrer where implemented to reduce data transfer and protect the originating window.

6. Hacker News live feed

The “Community Signal” section retrieves public story data from the Hacker News Firebase API in your browser. When this section loads, your browser may connect to hacker-news.firebaseio.com, a service delivered using Google infrastructure. Technical connection data, including your IP address, may be transmitted to the service.

The feed is included to provide current developer-community links. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, based on our legitimate interest in providing timely technology information. If you do not want this connection, you can block requests to that domain in your browser or content blocker.

7. Web search

The curated search operates locally in your browser. If you select “Search the web,” a new DuckDuckGo results page opens with your search terms. Only then is your query transmitted to DuckDuckGo, and DuckDuckGo’s privacy information applies. Tech Stuff does not receive the results or store the query on its server.

8. Contact by email or telephone

If you contact us, we process the information you provide to answer your request and any follow-up questions. We do not disclose the information without a legal basis. Processing is based on Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR when the request concerns a contract or pre-contractual measures, and otherwise on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. Where consent is requested, Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR applies.

Contact data is deleted once the request has been conclusively processed unless statutory retention requirements apply.

9. Your GDPR rights

Subject to the applicable legal requirements, you have the following rights:

• access to your stored personal data (Art. 15 GDPR)
• rectification of inaccurate data (Art. 16 GDPR)
• erasure of data (Art. 17 GDPR)
• restriction of processing (Art. 18 GDPR)

10. Data transfers

Opening external resources or loading the browser-based Hacker News feed may result in connections to providers outside the European Economic Area, including the United States. Depending on the provider, transfers may rely on an adequacy decision, the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, standard contractual clauses, or another lawful transfer mechanism. Refer to the relevant provider’s privacy information for details.

We may update this privacy policy when the website, external services, or legal requirements change. The version published on this page is the current version.
